Sun Don't Rise

Claxton 4th graders
We studied the Underground Railroad and wrote this song from the perspective of a young person running from the slave catchers.
The furious wind whipped through the trees
The melancholy rain beat down.
Don’t let the slave catchers snatch me
Cause I really want to live so free.
I hear clanging thunder o’er me
Stepping through the rocky hills
The growling wind terrified me
Back in Africa, my mother has the chills
Chorus
Sun don’t rise,
Keep me safe so they won’t find me
Sun don’t rise,
Keep it dark so I will be free
Excited sleet falling at my face
Stepping though the nervous leaves
The growling wind terrified me
Running right by the whispering trees.
I run past waves laughing so cold
Horses running right behind me
The moon is taunting, laughing at my steps
My soul is strong, my legs are weak.
Chorus
I was as furious as a raging volcano,
I was broken as two twigs breaking
I was running with a broken heartbeat
The wind was growling and raking.
I won’t go back to the devil’s cage
I leave the land of whips and rope
Close to freedom, it’s a special place,
I cross the river, I feel hope.
Chorus
